Follow the Journey

A feature documentary

Narrated by Ted Danson

Seven North Atlantic right whale mothers and their newborn calves. One year and more than 2,000 miles, from Florida to the Canadian Maritimes.

About the film

What does it take to bring a species back from the brink of extinction? Follow the Journey is a deep dive into the lives of one of the most endangered whales on Earth, the North Atlantic right whale.

Over the course of one year, we follow seven mothers and their newborn calves from their calving grounds off Florida and Georgia to the Canadian Maritimes. With remarkable access, we experience the splendor and the plight of this great whale through the eyes of a closely knit team of marine biologists, whale disentanglers, aerial survey teams, ocean advocates and Indigenous leaders as they race against time to save the species from extinction.

Drawing on the most extensive archival documentation of any whale species, the film reconstructs individual whales’ life histories and traces humanity’s relationship with right whales over time, from a species hunted to near extinction for its oil to today’s extensive efforts to ensure its survival.
